Are you worried you're going to forget something? I'm right there with you which is exactly why I make checklists and reminders on my phone to keep me straight.
Here are my basic go-to lists to prepare for trips. You can customize these lists based on your specific needs and destination. It's always a good idea to start packing a day or two before your trip to ensure you have everything you need.

A backpacking hiking trip requires some strategic planning and research.
Quality Footwear is Key
- Sturdy, waterproof hiking boots provide essential support and insulation.
- Don't forget to pack moisture-wicking socks and extra pairs to keep your feet dry and warm.
Essential Gear for Safety & Navigation
- Reliable map and compass or a GPS device are essential for navigation in potentially snow-covered terrain.
- Carry a charged mobile phone, but remember that cold weather can drain battery quickly. A power bank is a crucial backup.
- Carry a headlamp with extra batteries, a whistle, and a multi-tool for safety.
- Will you be in bear country? If so, you may need to bring bear mace.
Emergency First Aid Supplies
- Put together a comprehensive first aid kit, including bandages, antiseptic, pain relievers, and any personal medications.
- Equip yourself with emergency supplies like a space blanket, fire starter, and a whistle for unexpected situations.
Stay Dry & Warm
- Opt for moisture-wicking, insulated, and waterproof clothing, including gloves, a beanie, and a neck gaiter.
- Ensure you have extra clothing layers in case of unexpected weather changes.
Keep in mind that packing for a cold-weather backpacking hiking trip requires thoughtful planning and attention to detail. Depending on how cold the weather will be, you may need to bring a windbreaker, earmuffs, and gloves.
