Checklist for Backpacking/Hiking Trip

Start your planning early
Start your planning early

A backpacking hiking trip requires some strategic planning and research.

Quality Footwear is Key

  • Sturdy, waterproof hiking boots provide essential support and insulation.
  • Don't forget to pack moisture-wicking socks and extra pairs to keep your feet dry and warm.

Essential Gear for Safety & Navigation

  • Reliable map and compass or a GPS device are essential for navigation in potentially snow-covered terrain.
  • Carry a charged mobile phone, but remember that cold weather can drain battery quickly. A power bank is a crucial backup.

  • Carry a headlamp with extra batteries, a whistle, and a multi-tool for safety.
  • Will you be in bear country? If so, you may need to bring bear mace.

Emergency First Aid Supplies

  • Put together a comprehensive first aid kit, including bandages, antiseptic, pain relievers, and any personal medications.
  • Equip yourself with emergency supplies like a space blanket, fire starter, and a whistle for unexpected situations.

Stay Dry & Warm

  • Opt for moisture-wicking, insulated, and waterproof clothing, including gloves, a beanie, and a neck gaiter.
  • Ensure you have extra clothing layers in case of unexpected weather changes.

Keep in mind that packing for a cold-weather backpacking hiking trip requires thoughtful planning and attention to detail. Depending on how cold the weather will be, you may need to bring a windbreaker, earmuffs, and gloves.
